5 Digital Side Hustles I Tried in My 40s—and Which Ones Actually Grew My Wealth

When I hit my early 40s, I realized my 9-to-5 job no longer fulfilled me—financially or creatively. I’m part of the pre-xennial microgeneration, straddling analog roots and digital futures. Like many peers, I started exploring career pivot strategies for pre-xennials and discovered a sea of digital opportunities. But which ones are worth your time and actually grow your money and wealth?

I don’t come from a tech background, and if you’re a digital late adopter like me, that probably resonates. That’s why I documented my journey, tested various digital side hustles, and compiled a data-backed comparison of what really worked for someone without a head start in Silicon Valley. Here’s what I found.

1. Affiliate Blogging: Steady Growth in a Crowded Market

Starting a blog seemed low-cost and doable—and it is. I launched a niche blog focused on career pivot strategies for pre-xennials and monetized it with Amazon affiliate links and software referrals.

My results after 12 months: Averaging $280/month in passive income. Not life-changing, but promising.

Data insight: According to Statista, affiliate marketing spending in the U.S. is set to reach $8.2 billion by 2024. Most affiliate bloggers earn under $500/month in their first year, so I considered this a win.

2. Selling Digital Products on Etsy: Creatively Lucrative

Using Canva and some creativity, I designed printable planners, career worksheets, and digital journaling templates targeted at people reconsidering their careers in midlife.

My results after 6 months: One $37 template became a bestseller. Averaged $600/month in profit with minimal customer service.

What worked: Niching down helped. I didn’t just sell “planners,” I sold “career reboot worksheets for professionals in their 40s.”

3. Online Coaching: High Income, High Effort

Leveraging two decades of experience in HR, I began offering 1:1 career coaching for transitioning employees—many of them also digital late adopters looking to pivot.

My results after 9 months: $3,200/month on average, but the time commitment was steep—each client required marketing, prep time, Zoom calls, and follow-ups.

Bottom line: Fantastic income potential but not passive. Great if you love client interaction and can protect your schedule.

4. YouTube Tutorials: The Patience Game

Inspired by creators half my age, I launched a YouTube channel where I broke down digital basics for fellow late adopters—think “How to Use Canva” or “LinkedIn Tips for Over-40s.”

My results after 12 months: ~1,100 subscribers, zero income until month 10. Started seeing $120/month from ad revenue and affiliate partnerships.

Lesson learned: This one takes time and consistency. It’s a long game but pairs well with other hustles if you can repurpose content.

5. Digital Course Creation: Scalable and Sustainable

This was my most intimidating option, but also the most scalable. I created a course titled “Digital Career Pivots for Pre-Xennials” using Teachable and my existing coaching framework.

My results after 6 months: $4,500 net income from just two course launches. Automated email funnels continued to sell every month.

Data insight: According to Thinkific, 44% of course creators earn between $1,000 and $10,000 per course annually. With the right niche, the sky’s the limit.

The Verdict: Which Side Hustles Built the Most Wealth?

After trying five digital paths, coaching and course creation emerged as the clear financial winners—but they also required more up-front effort and specialized knowledge. Selling digital products on Etsy provided a healthy balance of creativity and income, while affiliate blogging and YouTube are best treated as long-term plays.

If you’re a pre-xennial considering a career pivot, the good news is you don’t need to be a tech genius. What matters most is consistency, niche clarity, and the willingness to experiment and evolve.
